African Blackwood, also known as Dalbergia Melanoxylon, is found naturally in countries in East Africa such as Tanzania, Mozambik and Kenya. The wood of this tree is very dense, strong and durable and its dark black or black-brown color makes it different from the rest of the wood. African Blackwood is mainly used to make high quality musical instruments such as clarinet, flute, obo and basoon. Its sound quality is so good that it is also called musical wood. Apart from this, it is also used in making expensive furniture, luxury jewels, sculptures and decorative items. This wood is considered extremely expensive due to its strength, fine finish and prolonged ability to last long.

Status and price of African Blackwood in India

African Blackwood is not found naturally in India. Some research institutes and selected private nurseries have grown experimentally, but there is no large -scale cultivation. Its cultivation requires special kind of hot and dry climate, low rainfall and special soil which is found in African areas. The small plant of African Blackwood in India can be available from about Rs 1000 to Rs 5,000, but the availability is very limited. The price of wood from a mature tree (which takes 50-60 years to get ready) goes from about Rs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh per cubic meter in the international market. 1 cubic meter wood means 1 meter, long, wide and thick. The price of this entire tree can be Rs 7-8 crore. If you have to import it in India, then the cost increases even more, because it also adds heavy custom duty and logistics expenses.

Why is it so expensive?

  • The wood is extremely dense and strong, so that it does not break or twisted.
  • Naturally its availability has reduced.
  • The tree takes several decades to grow up, that is, supply is very limited.
  • There is no option in high quality musical instruments.
  • Many countries have also imposed strict restrictions on its harvesting and export.
