The number of retail investors in India’s stock market is increasing very fast. The number of demat accounts in the country has increased to 19.4 crores.

In a program organized by IVCA Renewable Energy Summit 2025, Ruchi Chojar, Executive Director of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), said that trust is the cornerstone of investment and India has gained that trust. In the statement issued by the IVCA, Ruchi Chozar was quoted as saying that ‘SEBI’s regulatory approach has been focused on balanced with systemic stability and investor protection. Faith is the cornerstone of investment and India has gained that faith.
He said that retail participation increased from 3.6 crore demat accounts in 2019 to 19.4 crore in 2025. Ruchi Chojkar said that in the last 10 years, Indian companies have raised around Rs 93 lakh crore through shares and loans. Records of equity in FY 2024-25 were raised records Rs 4.3 lakh crore, including Rs 1.7 lakh crore from the initial public issue (IPO).
Retail investor growing symbol of trust
He said that ‘this increase is inspired not only by policy and infrastructure, but also by the increasing confidence of investors.’ Apart from this, he also talked about the importance of capital market in India’s clean energy journey. He said that ‘the role of capital markets and especially alternative investment funds (AIF) will be important in moving towards India’s green change.’
